• Explain the thermohaline circulation

  1. In polar regions, sea water cools and becomes denser. High salinity caused by freezing of seawater also contributes to the density
  2. Sinking water flows to the ocean floor and travels to other parts of the world.
  3. Upwelling- In warmer regions, deep water rises to the surface, bringing nutrient rich water which enhances phytoplankton growth.
