  • condoms can be used to protect against sexually transmitted infections e.g. chlamydia, gonorrhoea, and HIV
  • condoms often contain a spermicide, which kills the sperm on release
  • abstinence - refraining from sexual activity or sexual intercourse. the only truly effective way of avoiding pregnancy
  • sterilisation - (women) fallopian tubes are cut so eggs cannot reach the uterus.
  • sterilisation - (men) sperm ducts (tubes between testes and penis) cut so that sperm is not released on ejaculation
