    the sense we have about what directs our lives
    those with internal LOC believe things happen as they control it themselves.Those who have external LOC say things happen outside of their control.People with high internal LOC are more likely to resist pressure to conform or obey
  • People with high internal LOC are more likely to resist pressure to conform or obey. If someone takes responsibility for their own actions they tend to base decisions of their own belief rather than the opinion of others. They tend to be more confident, have more achievements and are more intelligent. They also have a greater resistance to social influence

    Social support can help people resist social influence
    • Albrecht et al ran an 8 week programme to help pregnant adolescents ages 14-19 resist peer pressure to smoke.They were given a buddy and those who did have one were less likely to not smoke than those who did not have one.

    Gamson et al’s participants were told to produce evidence that would help an oil company run a smear campaign.  Researchers found higher levels of resistance. This may be due to participants being in groups so they could discuss. 29/33 disobeyed.Peer support can lead to disobedience

    Holland repeated a Milgram type study and looked at internals and externals37% of internals did not continue to the highest shock level and 23% of externals didn’tInternals showed greater resistance.

    Twenge et al analysed data from LOC studies from a 40 year period. She found out over time people became more resistant to obedience but also more external which is weird as we would’ve expected them to become internal.LOC is not a valid explanation on how people resist social influence

    ability of people to withstand social pressure to conform to majority or obey authority. influenced by both situational and dispositional factors
  • social support?
    presence of people who resist pressures to conform or obey can help people to do same. act as models to show others that resistance to social influence is possible.
