  • what are the steps of minority influence ?

  • what is minority influence ?
    Refers when someone or a small group of people influence the beliefs and opinions of others.
  • consistency?
    Minority must be consistent in their views which increases the interest from others. People start to rethink their views.
  • committment?
    The minority must be committed to their view. They could participate in risk activities to draw attention to their views. This is called the augmentation principle.
  • flexibility?
    Flexibility has to be used as if the same idea are being said then teh minority is seen as rigid so they must be open to adapt their POV and accept reasonable and valid counterarguments 
  • outcome?
    Overtime people from the majority join the minority. The faster this happens the faster the rate of conversion. This is called the snowball effect. Change has then occurred 
  • support - consistency?
    Moscovici et al s blue and green slide study showed that a consistent minority view had a greater effect on changing views than an inconsistent view.Wood carried out a meta analysis of over 100 similar studies and found that those with the most consistency were the most influential.
  • support - deeper processing?
    Martin et al presented an argument supporting a particular viewpoint. Then he measured listeners' agreement. One group  heard a minority group agree with the initial group and another group heard agree with it. They were exposed to a conflicting view and agreements were measured again.Those who listened to the minority were less willing to change their opinion. More enduring effect
  • counter?
    Martin et al s research does not represent everyday life. Majorities often have more power and have a higher status. Minorities are often committed when they are faced with hostile opposition .Limited to what we know in real life situations 
  • artificial tasks?
    The research does not show how minorities will change the majority's view in real life.These studies are lacking external validity and are limited
