• the brain up of three main parts the cerebral cortex, the cerebellum and the brain stem/ medulla
• the cerebral cortex is the outer layer of the brain and is responsible for conscious thought and memory and language
• the cerebellum is located at the lower back of the brain and is responsible for muscle coordination
• the brain stem/ medulla is responsible for unconscious functions such as breathing, heart rate, and blood pressure
• one way to study the brain is to study patients with brain damage because the type of damage will affect how a person acts
• one way to study the brain is to use magnetic response imaging (MRI scan) which produces very detailed pictures of the brains structures
• another way to research the brain is to use electrical stimulation to see what happens when certain parts of the brain are stimulated. It can also reduce muscle tremors caused by disorders such as parkinson's disease
• people can have surgery to remove parts of the brain that is causing seizures however the brain is very complex and delicate so messing with it can cause undesired consequences
