cell division

• the 3 main reasons for cell division:

  • reproduction
  • growth
  • repair
• parent cells divide to produce two new organisms
• each organism inherits genetic information from its parent
• there are 2 types of reproduction:

  • asexual
  • sexual
• asexual reproduction is the production of offspring from only one parent
• sexual production of offspring is caused by the fusion of two gametes
• asexual offspring are genetically identical to the parent
• in sexual reproduction, offspring have genetic information from each parent
• concentration refers to the amount of substance present in a given volume of solution
• diffusion is the movement from an area of high concentration to low concentration
• if our cells didn't remain small, then it would take too long for nutrients to get around the cell
• our bodies are constantly replacing dead cells
• cuts/blisters need new cells to fill in the gaps
• broken bones need new cells to heal
