• The 4 magnetic MATERIALS can be made into PERMANENT and INDUCED magnets
• WHAT ARE MAGNETIC FIELDS?

  • REGION around a MAGNET where the FORCE acts on another MAGNET or a magnetic MATERIAL
• STRENGTH OF A MAGNETIC FIELD:

  • Depends on the DISTANCE from the MAGNET
  • Strongest at the POLES (field lines are more DENSE)
• COMPASS:

  • Can be used to find the DIRECTION of a magnetic field
  • Has a small BAR magnet (can plot the MAGNETIC field)
• EARTH’S MAGNETIC FIELD:

  • Magnetic COMPASS- has a small BAR magnet
  • If the compass is held AWAY from any MAGNETS- needle ALWAYS points in the NORTH to SOUTH direction
  • Shows that the EARTH has its own MAGNETIC field due to its CORE
