qualitative movement analysis principles

Cards (5)

  • QMA
definition = systematic observation of quality of human movement for providing intervention to improve performance
    4 stages:
    • preparation
    • observation
    • evaluation
    • error correction
  • Preparation
    • Gather relevant knowledge + prepare for observation
    • Collect knowledge about performer
    • Identify:
    • Purpose for analysis
    • Key features of the skill
    • Data collection methods
    • How and when the observation will take place
    • Consider: validity + reliability
    • ⭐Validity = tests capacity to measure what it is intended to measure
    • ⭐Reliability = ability to reproduce similar results in similar/identical conditions
    • Same: procedures + equipment + environment + tester
  • Observation
    • Observing the performer
    • Take notes about performance
    • Video recording (preferred)
    • Reliable
    • Replay multiple times
    • Can slow down video
    • Athlete can conduct self analysis
    • More than one person can review it
    • Direct observation
    • Not as reliable
    • More subjective
    • Quick + more accessible
    • Dependant on memory of observer
    • Doesn’t allow for comparison
    • Can’t be viewed by athlete
  • Evaluation
    • Analyst review footage and notes to judge quality
    • Evaluate performance
    • Identify errors:
    • What is the problem?
    • What is causing the problem?
    • How can the problem be corrected?
    • Reasons for movement error:
    • Psychosocial problems
    • Critical ability, strength, endurance, flexibility etc.
    • Skill performance deficiencies (technique, perceptual + decision error)
  • Error correction
    • Based on interpretation of data observed
    • Feedback is provided to performer
    • Strategies are developed to fix or improve identified problems
