maintaining nitrogen balance

Cards (5)

  • when food is digested, proteins are broken down by protease into amino acids
  • the body can’t store extra proteins/amino acids
  • liver forms ammonia by deamination of excess amino acids
  • ammonia is highly toxic so it is immediately converted to urea to be safely excreted
  • liver cells release urea in the blood along with water to get to the kidneys - where the blood is filtered
