Potential issue

• there are protein antigens on every cell’s surface which are specific to everyone
• the antigens help our body distinguish between our own cells and invading pathogens/other foreign cells
• the organ from the donor has different antigen proteins so the patient’s immune system detects the transplanted organ as foreign and initiates an immune response against it - rejection
