Cards (5)

  • Conformity is a change in a person's behaviour or opinion as a result of real or imagined pressure from a group of people.
  • Internalisation is a deep type of conformity where we take on the majority view because we accept it as correct, leading to far-reaching and permanent changes in behaviour even when absent from the group.
  • Identification is a moderate type of conformity where we act in the same way as the group because we value it and want to be a part of it, but we don’t agree with it privately.
  • Compliance is a superficial and temporary type of conformity where we outwardly go along with the majority, but privately disagree.
  • Informational social influence is an explanation of conformity that says we agree with the opinion of the majority as we believe it is correct, as we want to be correct.
