Later Complications of MI

Cards (5)

  • Common Later Complications:
    • Chronic ventricular failure
    • Left Ventricle aneurysm
    • Late arrhythmias
    • Post-infarct angina
    • Re-infarction
    • Post-myocardial syndrome
  • Common Later Complications - Left Ventricle aneurysm:
    • may occur at any stage
    • Any aneurysm whether in a vessel or cardiac chamber disturbs blood dynamics/flow patterns and predisposes to thrombus formation, as well as the risk of rupture
  • Common Later Complications - Post-infarct angina:
    • anginal pain that begins within 10 days of an acute myocardial infarction, usually requires a percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI)
  • Common Later Complications - Re-infarction:
    • failure to provide adequate pharmacology and / or failure to adequately modify lifestyle factors results in a subsequent MI as some undefined later date
  • Common Later Complications - Post-myocardial syndrome:
    • (Dresslers syndrome)
    • occurs weeks / months following acute myocardial infarction
    • It consists of pericarditis occurring as a result of friction between the dyskinetic epicardium and the pericardium
    • Signs of post-myocardial syndrome include pain on inspiration and movement
    • Eventually an auto-immune response is triggered resulting in pleuritis and pleural effusion in addition to the pericarditis
    • Dressler’s syndrome is rare
