    In a series of group interviews and discussions with teen-agers from a South London school, Ives asked them about their use of language. They come from a wide range of ethnic, religious and cultural backgrounds with an above average percentage of English as an additional language speakers and minority ethnic backgrounds (mainly Afro-Caribbean) . They talked about the words and phrases which they felt 'set them apart ' from other areas of the country.
