Describe one assumption of the psychodynamic approach

Cards (4)

  • Point:
One assumption of the psychodynamic approach is that much of human behaviour is influenced by the unconscious mind.
  • Evidence:
Freud compared the mind to an iceberg, suggesting that the majority of our thoughts and motivations exist below the surface in the unconscious. He believed that unresolved conflicts and emotional drives hidden in the unconscious shape our behaviour, often revealing themselves indirectly through dreams and fantasies.
  • Explain:
since the unconscious is inaccessible, it expresses itself through symbolic forms, such as dreams and defence mechanisms. For example, a person experiencing anxiety due to inner conflicts between the id, ego, and superego may use defence mechanisms like repression, where painful memories are buried deep in the unconscious. If overused, these defences can lead to disturbed behaviour
  • Link
This assumption is significant in explaining behaviours that may seem irrational, as they may stem from unconscious conflicts. It also forms the basis for psychoanalytic therapy, which aims to uncover and resolve these hidden conflicts
