grim reaper-like figure because the spirit is hooded in black and doesn't talk.
"shroud" - the garment in which a corpse is wrapped in
"left nothing of it visible save one outstretched hand."
Death is really soon for Scrooge - the hand gives him a chnace of redemption - helping hand - only one chance.
Scrooge's last helping hand and the ghost is trying to prevent Scrooge's death
"The Spirit answered not"
The Ghost is silent because the ghost is quite unwelcoming - first impression of ghost
the future shouldn't be spoken of because scrooge still has another chance to change his ways
actions are more important than words.
scrooge needs to show that he's a new person
"one great heap of black"
There's no light so it could show that Scrooge has no hope after this - his last chance for redemption - all the other ghosts were full of light.
all the other ghosts had something around their middle to symbolise central purpose but this ghost is surrounded by darkness which is symbolic of death.
"plundered and bereft, unwatched, unwept, uncared for, was the body of this man"
"plundered" - stealing goods. (adjv.)
"bereft" - lack of something(advj).
Not one person cared for Scrooge and didn't have anyone to cry for him - repetition of prefix 'un' - shows how Scrooge has nothing and no one - lack of care. extension of the way Scrooge lived his life - ISOLATION.
the two adjectives links back to how Scrooge viewed the poor people - but now scrooge is being disregarded by everyone and being reduced to a man that people can profit from.
"They have brought him to a rich end, truly!"
No matter how much money you have, when you die, it is useless.
"I shall not leave its lesson, trust me" - scrooge
scrooge understands that the ghosts are trying to teach him something - he wants a become a better person.
"But I have not the power, Spirit. I have not the power."
"i have not the power" - repetition - scrooge doesn't know how having nothing feels like as he's a very wealthy man. - he's been stripped off all his power.
scrooge fears that the dead man may be him and he doesn't have the power/strength to unveil the man because then his fears will be confirmed.
the future has already been decided for scrooge - repetition also shows how scrooge is deeply anxious
"Very quiet. The noisy little Cratchits were as still as statues in one corner."
juxtaposition between "quiet" and "noisy" - shows how much of an impact Tiny Tim's death had on the Cratchitfamily, they've really changed.
contrasts Cratchits in stave 3
simile - "as still as statues" - they used to be full of life and all over the place but now they are drained of life.
"It would have done you good to see how green a place it is."
Bob went to the graveyard that Tiny Tim will be buried in.
"green" - Tiny Tim was full of joy should be buried in a place where there's still life left.
"he left the room, and went upstairs into the room above, which was lightedcheerfully."
Direct contrast to the "dead man" because there's no light in the room - Tiny Tim was the "light" of their house.
Tiny Tim's body still has light but the whole is dark.
unlike scrooge, Tiny Tim has people caring and crying over him
"the growth of vegetation's death, not life."
direct contrast to where Tiny Tim is being buried in - no greenery here but Tiny Tim's graveyard is full of greenery.
"I will honour Christmas in my heart, and try to keep it all the year."
Christmas is the time of giving away and spreading kindness - scrooge has never done this throughout his life so it shows how he's willing to change but it's too late.
Christmas - symbolic of unity - scrooge notices this symbol
"I will live in the Past, the Present, and the Future."
Past - he made many mistakes in the past.
Present - scrooge is starting to realise all the mistakes he's been making and wants to become a better person.
Future - it's a warning for scrooge that this will be his consequence if he doesn't change his ways.
