  • "slowly, gravely, silently"
    • "slowly" - the future is slowly coming
    • "gravely" - scrooge will die soon
    • "silently" - the future is unknown.
  • "It was shrouded in a deep black garment."
    • grim reaper-like figure because the spirit is hooded in black and doesn't talk.
    • "shroud" - the garment in which a corpse is wrapped in
  • "left nothing of it visible save one outstretched hand."
    • Death is really soon for Scrooge - the hand gives him a chnace of redemption - helping hand - only one chance.
    • Scrooge's last helping hand and the ghost is trying to prevent Scrooge's death
  • "The Spirit answered not"
    • The Ghost is silent because the ghost is quite unwelcoming - first impression of ghost
    • the future shouldn't be spoken of because scrooge still has another chance to change his ways
    • actions are more important than words.
    • scrooge needs to show that he's a new person
  • "one great heap of black"
    • There's no light so it could show that Scrooge has no hope after this - his last chance for redemption - all the other ghosts were full of light.
    • all the other ghosts had something around their middle to symbolise central purpose but this ghost is surrounded by darkness which is symbolic of death.
  • "plundered and bereft, unwatched, unwept, uncared for, was the body of this man"
    • "plundered" - stealing goods. (adjv.)
    • "bereft" - lack of something(advj).
    • Not one person cared for Scrooge and didn't have anyone to cry for him - repetition of prefix 'un' - shows how Scrooge has nothing and no one - lack of care. extension of the way Scrooge lived his life - ISOLATION.
    • the two adjectives links back to how Scrooge viewed the poor people - but now scrooge is being disregarded by everyone and being reduced to a man that people can profit from.
  • "They have brought him to a rich end, truly!"
    • No matter how much money you have, when you die, it is useless.
  • "I shall not leave its lesson, trust me" - scrooge
    • scrooge understands that the ghosts are trying to teach him something - he wants a become a better person.
  • "But I have not the power, Spirit. I have not the power."
    • "i have not the power" - repetition - scrooge doesn't know how having nothing feels like as he's a very wealthy man. - he's been stripped off all his power.
    • scrooge fears that the dead man may be him and he doesn't have the power/strength to unveil the man because then his fears will be confirmed.
    • the future has already been decided for scrooge - repetition also shows how scrooge is deeply anxious
  • "Very quiet. The noisy little Cratchits were as still as statues in one corner."
    • juxtaposition between "quiet" and "noisy" - shows how much of an impact Tiny Tim's death had on the Cratchit family, they've really changed.
    • contrasts Cratchits in stave 3
    • simile - "as still as statues" - they used to be full of life and all over the place but now they are drained of life.
  • "It would have done you good to see how green a place it is."
    • Bob went to the graveyard that Tiny Tim will be buried in.
    • "green" - Tiny Tim was full of joy should be buried in a place where there's still life left.
  • "he left the room, and went upstairs into the room above, which was lighted cheerfully."
    • Direct contrast to the "dead man" because there's no light in the room - Tiny Tim was the "light" of their house.
    • Tiny Tim's body still has light but the whole is dark.
    • unlike scrooge, Tiny Tim has people caring and crying over him
  • "the growth of vegetation's death, not life."
    • direct contrast to where Tiny Tim is being buried in - no greenery here but Tiny Tim's graveyard is full of greenery.
  • "I will honour Christmas in my heart, and try to keep it all the year."
    • Christmas is the time of giving away and spreading kindness - scrooge has never done this throughout his life so it shows how he's willing to change but it's too late.
    • Christmas - symbolic of unity - scrooge notices this symbol
  • "I will live in the Past, the Present, and the Future."
    • Past - he made many mistakes in the past.
    • Present - scrooge is starting to realise all the mistakes he's been making and wants to become a better person.
    • Future - it's a warning for scrooge that this will be his consequence if he doesn't change his ways.
