microscopes and micrscopy

Cards (18)

  • two types of microscopes: light and electron
  • eyepiece lens: has a fixed magnfication so the cell can be seen
  • objective lens: allows different magnfications
  • object: the real sample or object your looking at
  • image: the image we see when we look down the microscope
  • magnfication: how many times larger the image is than the object
  • magnfication equation = image size / actual size
  • resolution: the shortest distance between two points on an object
or a measure on how detailed the image is
  • light microscopes :
    easy to use
    cheaper
    rely on light
    resolution is limited
cannot be used to study organelles in cells because of small resolution
  • electron microscopes:
    very expensive
    hard to use
    uses electrons instead of light
can be used to study organelles
  • nanometers to micrometers = divide 1000
  • micrometers to millimeters = divide 1000
  • millimeters to meters = divide 1000
  • meters to kilometers = divide 1000
  • kilometers to meters = x 1000
  • meters to millimeters = x 1000
  • millimeters to micrometers= x 1000
  • micrometers to nanometers = x 1000
