Light dependant reaction

Cards (4)

  • Oxidation = a substance gains oxygen and loses hydrogen. It loses electrons
  • Reduction = substance gains hydrogen and loses oxygen. It gains electrons
  • The LDR takes place in the thylakoid membrane of the mitochondria
    1. Electrons get excited by absorbing light energy (photoionisation)
    2. These are passed along the electron transport chain in the thylakoid membrane
    3. Photolysis of water provides energy to pump protons from the stroma, making a proton gradient from the thylakoid space to the stroma
    4. Protons pass through the thylakoid membrane via ATP synthase channels. This catalyses the combination of ADP with an inorganic phosphate to form ATP
    5. Protons exit via the ATP synthase channels and are taken up by NADP, which forms NADPH
