• Cell wall - Protects and supports the cell, made of cellulose, rigid, surrounds cell membrane - In plant - Castle walls, support beams
• Cell membrane - decides what goes in and out of the cell, semi-permeable, flexible, double layer of lipids and protein, surrounds cell - In both - Security, gate keeper
• Nucleus - Has chromosomes that contain genetic info (DNA), directs cell activities, largest organelle, centrally located, surrounded by membrane - In both - City hall, CEO
• Nuclear membrane/Nuclear envelope - Allows substances to leave and enter the nucleus, has pores - In both
• Chromosome/Chromatin - Has DNA for telling when to divide and grow and make proteins, when not dividing looks like spaghetti, when dividing looks like rod - In both - Blueprints for city
• Nucleolus - Makes ribosomes, small, rough, structure in nucleus - In both - Factory
• Ribosome - Make proteins, no membrane, small, rough, found in cytoplasm or RER - In both - Machines in factory
• RER/Rough ER - Transport network for protein and materials, series of connected membranes, found next to nucleus, has ribosomes on it - In both - Highway, bus, train
• SER/Smooth ER - Makes lipids and steroids, no ribosomes, series of connected membranes - In both - Tunnels
• Cytoplasm - supports and protects and contains and surrounds all organelles, gel-like substance, keeps pressure of the cell - In both - Sidewalk, lawn, floor
• Mitochondria/Mitochondrion - Converts energy stored in food to a form of energy the cell can use, make molecule called ATP, looks like sausage, has multiple membranes, powerhouse of the cell - In both - Energy plant
• Vacuole - Stores water and maintains water pressure in plant cell, storage area for both, filled with food or water or waste, one large one for plants, many small ones for animals - In both - Warehouse
• Lysosome - Breaks down substances, recycles old organelles, detoxifies poisons, small structures, has enzymes - In animal - Recycling center
• Chloroplast - Site of photosynthesis, provides energy for plants to make food, has double membrane, contains chlorophyll (green pigment) which capture sunlight - In plant - Solar panels
• Golgi apparatus - Modifies and sorts packages, looks like a stack of flattened pancakes - In both - Amazon
