Muliti-store model of memory

Cards (4)

  • Proposed by Atkinson and Shiffrin, they believed information flowed through the model in a fixed sequence from one store to another.
Environmental stimuli would enter the sensory memory. Then we have to pay attention in order for it to enter stm. It then undergoes elaborative rehearsal to enter the ltm.
  • One strength is that there is research supporting the model. Baddeleys encoding study showed participants encoded ltm and stm differently. Shows they are a separate store suggested by the model
  • One limitation is that there is evidence of more than one STM store. KF was unable to use process words if read to him but could recall if he read to himself. Shows that the STM is just not one store.
  • Another limitation is that prolonged rehearsal is not needed for transfer to LTM. Watkins et al discovered its the type of rehearsal matters more ( elaborative rehearsal). This suggests the model doesnt explain in great detail how LTM is achieved
