Hybrid orbitals

• A hybrid orbital is a set of orbitals with identical properties formed by the combination of two different orbitals with different energies. The resulting hybrid orbital has an energy level between the two orbitals
• sp3: (basic) tetrahedral (derived) bent, trigonal pyramidal
• sp2: (basic) trigonal planar (derived) bent
• sp: (basic) linear
