  • Temperature
    • Normal = 36.5 - 37.5 ºC
    • Pyrexia = higher than 37.5 ºC
    • high temperature indicates that patient may have an infection
  • Heart Rate
    • Normal = 50 - 100 beats per minute
    • less than 50 = bradycardic
    • more than 100 = tachycardic
  • Blood pressure (BP)
    • Normal range = 90/60 to 140/90 mmHg
    • Never mobilise a patient with low blood pressure - they may faint!
    • Look at the trend
    • It may be normal for them to have high/low BP
  • Respiratory rate (RR)
    • Normal = 12 - 16 breaths/minute
    • Best to measure it yourself (pretend measuring HR)
  • Oxygen Saturation
    • The percentage of red blood cells in arterial blood which are fully saturated with oxygen (normal is 97 - 100%)
    • Taken with the patient breathing room air or oxygen
    • General rule - keep SaO2 higher than 90%
