      • Wundt was the first to open a lab designated to the scientific study of psychological enquiry under controlled conditions, facilitating accurate measurements and replication
      • focus was on trying to understand psychological processes of perception and structuralisms rather than philosophical or biological processes
      • however, the validity of introspection has difficulties as many aspects of our minds are unconscious so may have little accuracy
      • he later recognised that higher mental processes were hard to study using his procedures, this encouraged others to look for more appropriate methods, paving the way for approaches such as scanning
      • however, introspection is still used today I areas eg. therapy and studying emotional states, demonstrating its value
      • research used experience sampling which is used for gathering self reports of behaviour and emotion as they occur in participants natural environment and found a link between the experience of interest and well being
