• Element - simplest form/basic unit of matter
• Element - made up of the same kind of atom
• Metal - possess metallic luster, malleability, ductility, and conductivity
• Non metal - are the opposite of metals
• metalloid - properties of both metals and nonmetals
• Compound - chemical combination of 2 or more elements
• inorganic - compounds that does not contain carbon
• organic - compounds that contains carbon
• acid - turns blue litmus paper to red, has sour taste
• base - turns red litmus paper to blue, has bitter taste and slippery feeling
• salt/neutral - does not affect the color of the litmus paper, netrual compound

• salt - table salt/sodium chloride
• litmus paper - use to test if the substance is an acid, base, or salt
• ph paper / meter - tests the acidity or basicity of the substance
• mixture - physical combination of 2 or more substance

• heterogeneous - contains two or more distinct phase
• colloid - have particles of just the right size to scatter light
