• IP were forcibly removed from their lands and murdered by gold prospectors
• more people from around the world brought new diseases on to the plains which the IP were not used to
• all these changes happened rapidly - any hint of gold brought people rushing to areas regardless if it was protected by a treaty
• often the quickest route to get to the gold rush was through IP territory - thousands travelled through the route Bozeman Trail - despite it being against the Fort Laramie Treaty - led to the Red's Cloud War in 1866-68
• bad for the IP
