  • Cultural capital:
    Middle classes have additional 'cultural tools' that give them and advantage at school. Cultural capital is set by the middle class.
  • Deprivation:

    Victim blaming approach. Through their own behaviours and choices the working class are deprived and deficient in societies norms and values, thus holding themselves back from success.
  • Pierre Bourdieu:

    'Cultural capital' refers to the knowledge, language, abilities, attitudes, values and tastes of the Middle class.
    Students who posses cultural capital, can convert it into educational capital, and then long term economic capital.
  • Basil Bernstein:

    The working and middle class have different speech codes,
    The working class have a restricted speech code whereas the middle class have an elaborated speech code which gives them an advantage.
  • Barry Sugarman:

    The working class has their own set of deficient norms that secure their underachievement e.g. Fatalism, collectivism, present time orientation, and immediate gratification.

    The types of toys you have as a child reflects your social class which reflects your intellectual development

    Having uneducated parents causes deprivation for children because of their attitudes towards school/work.
