  • What is a strength of CBT?
It is effective,. March et al compared CBT to drugs to treat depression, after 36 weeks both groups had an 81% improvement showing CBT is just as effective as drugs. When drugs and CBT used together, improvement was 86% showing the best treatment is biological and cognitive treatments
  • What are the 3 weaknesses of CBT?
CBT may not work in severe cases as patients have no motivation and poor concentration showing the need for antidepressants for CBT to commence. Therefore is can't always be the sole treatment.
It doesn't change irrational environments that exist beyond the therapeutic session. Therefore it will reinforce irrational thoughts and maladaptive behaviors, therefore may not solve depression.
It can be frustrating for patients as the therapy focuses on the present and future which can frustrate patients who want to talk about the past to make sense of the disorder but can't. There's a suggested link between past trauma and depression.
