  • A patient is taught relaxation techniques (same as with systematic desensitisation). These techniques are then applied to the most feared situation either through direct exposure or imagined exposure.
  • It is based on the idea that intense fear or anxiety cannot last forever! Eventually the person will physiologically calm down, and then they will be relaxed around that phobic stimulus. If they keep running away from the phobic stimulus, then they will be stuck in a cycle of N.R. So, they are stopped from avoiding the phobic stimulus.
