What did Hitler want?

  • Hitler saw Versailles as a symbol of humiliation that Germany had been forced to suffer - it must be reversed
  • Hitler wanted to introduce conscription, increasing the size of the army, building up a Luftwaffe (air force) to help reduce unemployment and make Germany great again
  • Hitler belived Germany must take Lebensraum, living space in the east of Europe. The Treaty of Versailles redistributed over 10% of German land so Hitler wanted to make sure Germans had enough land to live on and farm. Part of the expansion was uniting the Volksdeutsche and creat a Grossdeutschland
  • Grossdeutschland included the people who had found themselves living outside of Germany after the Treaty of Versailles. It also meant Anschluss between Germany and Austria and taking over some parts of Czechoslovakia and Poland where German speaking people lived
  • A Jewish man called Karl Marx had developed the idea of Communism. Hitler hated Jews and felt they were ruining Germany; he believed that Communism would destroy Germany if he didn't destroy it first. One of his aims was to take over large parts of the USSR. However the USSR had a massive army and had begun to develop better relationships with Britain and France
