Revenge - wanted to punish Germany for starting the war
Cautious - punishing Germany too harshly could lead to another war
Trade - allowing Germany to trade would strengthen the British economy which wasn't in a good shape after 4 years of war
A barrier against Communism - strengthening Germany could provide a defence against Communist Russia - 'the disease from the East' which was so greatly feared
British Empire - taking Germany's colonies and keeping them as part of the Empire would increase income for Britain - another way of achieving this was weakening Germany's navy so Britain's remained unchallenged
Took a pragmatic approach - promised the British public revenge, but also saw it as a potential trade opportunity to help both countries recover from the war
