• Weaken - by weakening Germany's armed forces, it would reduce the chance of an invasion
• Protect - wanted to protect France from any future invasions
• Repay damage - wanted reparations to pay for damage caused by Germany in WWI
• Clemenceau was willing to compromise on certain things because he was a realist, but he was also stubborn and was willing to fight for what his country needed
