  • Volleyball is one of the most popular, competitive and recreational sports in the world. It is fast, it is exciting and the action is explosive.
  • It has become a widespread team sport in United States of America and throughout the world. The game is open for young, adult and even the senior rank. It is played by six players as the official game, two players as beach volley and sometimes even more for recreational activities.
  • The basic objective of the sports is to volley the ball over the net. It is a game of skill, endurance and strategy. This game can play by any level (beginners and elite). It is entertaining and enjoyable.
  • In February 9, 1895, Prof. William G. Morgan, a graduate of the Spring Field College of the Young Men's Christian Association (YMCA) developed the game of volleyball in Holyoke, Massachusetts, USA and it is initially called "MINTONETTE, He designed the game to be a combination of basketball, baseball, handball, softball and tennis.
  • Before the 1999, points could be scored only when the team had the serve and it is called "SIDE-OUT SCORING" and all sets up to 15 points only.
  • The FIVB change the rules in 1999 with the changes being compulsory in year 2000 to use the current scoring system and it is called the "RALLY POINT SYSTEM"
  • In, 1896, Alfred Halstead who is also a faculty member changed the name of mintonette to "VOLLEYBALL", after the game demonstration of Morgan.

  • Generally, sports pertain to lifetime activity for some people. Individual engage to sport as part of their leisure and/or recreation. Activity can be vigorous and competitive or mild and recreational, depending on the sport.
  • Hence, it is defined and summarized in the book that the term Sports refer to a highly organized competitive physical skill activity with rules and regulations.
