Steiner (1972) proposed the model of group effectiveness, which is helpful when looking at the relationship between individual and group performance.
Steiner (1972) model of group effectiveness
Actual productivity = potential productivity - losses due to faulty processes
Potential productivity
Refers to the best possible performance of the group, taking into account resources available and ability of the players. Eg - non league football team losing to chelsea may be reaching their full potential
Losses due to faulty processes are caused by
Coordination problems
Motivational problems
Coordination problems
If coordination and timing of team do not match , team strategies that depend on them will suffer. Eg - poditional errors and wrongly timed moves.
Motivational problems
If individual members of a team are not motivated to the same extent they will be pulling in different directions and players will withdraw effort.
