  • Steiner (1972) proposed the model of group effectiveness, which is helpful when looking at the relationship between individual and group performance.
  • Steiner (1972) model of group effectiveness
    Actual productivity = potential productivity - losses due to faulty processes
  • Potential productivity
    Refers to the best possible performance of the group, taking into account resources available and ability of the players. Eg - non league football team losing to chelsea may be reaching their full potential
  • Losses due to faulty processes are caused by
    1. Coordination problems
    2. Motivational problems
  • Coordination problems
    If coordination and timing of team do not match , team strategies that depend on them will suffer. Eg - poditional errors and wrongly timed moves.
  • Motivational problems
    If individual members of a team are not motivated to the same extent they will be pulling in different directions and players will withdraw effort.
