What is a leaf?
An
organ
what are the plant tissues?
Epidermal
tissues
Palisade
mesophyll
Spongy
mesophyll
Xylem
and
phloem
Meristem
tissue
What are the epidermal tissues?
They cover the
surfaces
and
protect
them - they often have a waxy
cuticle
on the surface which
waterproofs
the surface
what is the palisade mesophyll?
it contains lots of
chloroplasts
which carry out
photosynthesis
what is the spongy mesophyll?
a tissue containing some
chloroplasts
for
photosynthesis
but also has big
air
spaces and a large surface area to make the
diffusion
of gases easier
what do the xylem do?
carry
water
and dissolved
mineral ions
from the
roots
up to the leaves
what do the phloem do?
carry dissolved
food
from the
leaves
around the
plant
what is the meritstem tissue?
it is at the growing tips of
roots
and shoots and is made up of
stem cells
Where are the guard cells found?
Around the
stomata
