Muscles in sit to stand

Cards (3)

  • Flexion momentum:
    • Tibialis anterior works to help position the foot and also produces a concentric contraction to bring tibial shaft forward
    • Iliopsoas would also be working to be producing the trunk flexion movement
    • Most of the back extensor muscles would be working isometrically to maintain spinal extension
  • Momentum Transfer:
    • Tibialis anterior continues to produces a dorsiflexion action
    • Soleus is an antagonist to tibialis anterior, working eccentrically, producing a plantarflexion action
    • Vastus lateralis works to stop knee collapsing forward and then works concentrically to produce an extension movement
  • Extension:
    • Soleus and gastrocnemius work to pull the ankle into plantarflexion
    • Hip and knee extensors work
    • Tibialis anterior works eccentrically acting as an antagonist to soleus and gastrocnemius
