• Mary had been brought up by COA as a strict Cath
• When H had manipulated religion to divorce COA, denied the authority of the Pope and seized control over the Church for himself, Mary had been horrified 
• Saw the break with Rome as a sinful act and was determined to correct it
• Destruction of Church property and the rewriting of the Prayer Book only confirmed her desire to put things right and restore the old religion
