Organic Analysis Tests

• Test for Alkene: Shake with bromine water - orange turns colourless
• Test for Halogenoalkanes: Add aqueous sodium hydroxide and warm gently, acidify with HNO3 and AgNO3. Results: AgCl is white, AgBr is cream, AgI is yellow
• Test for Alcohol: Add acidified potassium dichromate solution. Result: Orange turns green with primary and secondary alcohols. No colour change with tertiary alcohols
• Test for Aldehydes: Warm with Tollens' reagent and silver mirror forms
• Test for Carboxylic Acids: Use sodium hydrogen carbonate. Result: Effervescence, CO2 gas is formed
