Cracking

• Cracking is a thermal decomposition reaction.
• Long chain alkanes after cracking form shorter alkanes and an alkene.
• In catalytic cracking:

  1. Long chain alkanes are heated until they vaporise into a gas
  2. They're passed over a hot, powdered aluminium oxide catalyst
  3. They break into small chain alkanes and an alkene
