As a romantic poet, Blake was appalled by the industrialisation he saw at the time, and the suffering the ‘progress’ of the country and the rich had on the working people of London. Perhaps the poet wants us to question, ‘At what cost is this progress coming’ as the country transitioned from an agrarian to an industrial society.
