  • The heart is responsible for pumping oxygenated blood to the body and deoxygenated blood to the lungs.
  • The right side of the heart receives deoxygenated blood from the body through the superior vena cava (SVC) and inferior vena cava (IVC).
  • Blood flows from the heart into arteries, arterioles, capillaries, venules then veins.
The only exceptions are portal veins, which connect capillaries together.
  • The chambers of the heart contract and relax in a series known as the cardiac cycle.
First the atria contract, then the ventricles, then after, the whole heart relaxes.
  • The cardiac conduction system are the cells that enable the heart to beat at all once.
The impulse starts at the sinoatrial node, then travels to the internodal pathways, the atrioventricular node, AV Bundle and branches, then ends at the Purkinje fibers.
