Treatment ideas

Cards (6)

  • Principles of treatment:
    • Based on your problem list and prioritised issues
    • Target specific issue (part task if necessary)
    • Pitch at appropriate level (Individual, Task, Environment & goals)
    • Ensure appropriate skill learning strategies (Motor Learning - demonstration, cues, feedback, practice regime)
    • Practice full task in modified form (when able to)
    • Progress task as able (Individual, Task, Environment, fading feedback etc)
  • Treatment idea 1:
    • Part practice
    • Foot placement
    • before STS
    • Note feedback tapes
    • Modified action part of individual through decreasing friction using roller skates to bring foot 10 cm behind knee
    • Environment is quiet
  • Treatment idea 2:
    • part task practice
    • person leaning forward to touch target to maintain arc pattern
    • can progress by moving target further back
  • Treatment idea 3:
    • full task practice
    • can progress by moving seat lower
    • allows progressive use of knee extensors
    • use of motivation
  • Outcome measures for STS:
    • Broad impairment/activity level measures:
    • Timed Stand Test (and variations are the only ones specific to sit to stand)
    • Timed Up And Go (TUG/TUAG)
    • Elderly Mobility Scale (EMS)
    • Berg Balance Scale (BBS)
    • Motor Assessment Scale (MAS)
  • the outcome measure for STS are:
    • Integrated into wider activity
    • E.g. TUAG – timed STS plus walk
    • Only crude measure of quality
    • E.g. BBS – with or without hands, min or max assistance
    • Only specific conditions
    • E.g. MAS - stroke
