  • Four Italians, including a General, were surveying an area of Greece for the League of Nations when they were killed. By this time Italy was ruled by a dictator called Mussolini. He was furious and invaded the Greek island of Corfu, killing 15 people
  • Greece appealed to the League, who condemned Mussolini but agreed that Greece should pay compensation for the original murder
  • Mussolini still wasn't satisfied and complained to the Conference of Ambassadors, a group of powerful countries containing Britain, France and Japan. Greece was forced to apologise and pay compensation directly to Italy, not through the League
  • Although there was no clear evidence that Greek soldiers had carried out the assassination, Mussolini got virtually everything he had asked for
  • Corfu was a failure for the League
  • When a large country such as Italy threatened a smaller one, the League proved they could be ignored and overpowered
