• Parietal peritoneum - covers the interior surface of the wall of the abdominal cavity
• Visceral peritoneum - covers the organs within the abdominal cavity
• Peritonitis - inflammation of the peritoneal membrane resulting from chemical irritation
• Ascites - accumulation of excess serous fluid in the peritoneal cavity which can occur in peritonitis
