LIGHT AND DEPENDENT REACTIONS

Cards (10)

  • In a plant far, far, away light energy from the sun is used to make food, and so they are called Autotrophs
    • Heterotrophs cannot use the sun’s energy directly and get energy from their food
    • Adenosine Triphosphate (ATP) is a compound cells use to store and release energy
  • ATP is the basic energy source of all cells
  • ATP is made up of an adenine, a sugar, and 3 phosphate groups
    • Adenosine Diphosphate (ADP) is similar to ATP
→ contains adenine, a sugar, only 2 phosphate groups
    • Stored by cells, energy is when ADP becomes ATP
    • Energy is when ATP loses a phosphate and becomes ADP
  • → The hydrogen from NADPH comes from an electron carrier making NADP + H, NADPH
    • Photosynthesis uses the energy of sunlight to convert water and carbon dioxide into high-energy sugars and oxygen
    6O2 + 6H2O → (light) C6H12O6 +6O2
