  • Proteins: important for growing and repairing cells/ proteins are broken down to amino acids to synthesize enzymes
  • Carbohydrates: broke down into glucose to use for in respiration/ it's the main source of energy
  • Fats and Oils: source of energy/ fats deposited under skin to use for insulation
  • Vitamin C: for healthy bones, skins and gums/ to keep lining of blood vessels healthy
  • Vitamin D: strong bones and teeth
  • Calcium: strong bones and teeth/ involved in blood clotting
  • Iron: is needed to make hemoglobin in red blood cells
  • Fibre: adds bulk to food so that it moves easily down the digestive system/ helps prevent bowel cancer
  • Water: its continually being lost in excretion and sweating, must be constantly replaced
  • Scurvy: caused by lack of vitamin c
  • Symptoms: anemia, exhaustion, spontaneous bleeding, tooth lost, swelling
  • Rickets: lack of vitamin D and calcium
  • Symptoms of rickets: bone pain, lack of bone growth, weak soft bones
  • Anemia: lack of iron
  • Symptoms: fatigue, pale-yellowish skin, irregular heartbeat
  • Balanced diet: contains all the nutrients in the right propotions
