  • Androgyn is the combination of male and female characteristics
  • Gender is a person's sense of maleness or femaleness, a psychological/social construct
  • Sex is being genetically male (XY) or female (XX)
  • Sex-role stereotypes are set of shared expectations within a social group about what men and women should do and think
  • Sandra Bem was the first to try and measure Androgyny using a rating scale of 60 traits 20 traits that were considered masculine, 20 considered feminine and 20 so called neutral behaviours. This was called Bems Sex Role Inventory, or BSRI
  • Bem (1974) developed the Bem Sex Role Inventory. 20 items represent typically male characteristics, the next 20 represent typically female characteristics and the final 20 represent neutral characteristics. Through a self-report 7-point Likert scale, participants rate their own personality, which is then measured across the two dimensions of androgyny (or undifferentiated) and masculinity (or femininity).
