Set up 10 March 1793 in Paris under the authority of the CGS. It put on trial suspects accused of counter-revolutionary activity. Danton defended its necessity by arguing that justice had to be taken out of the mob’s hands (sans-culottes), and controlled by gov. Looked like a normal court, but all found guilty were executed. Judges and juries hand picked by CGS so unfair. From March 1793 to June 1794, 1251 people were executed in Paris, 85% were members of the Third Estate. Marie Antoinette executed 16 October, 31 Girondin deputies in 31 October, Philippe Egalité on 6 November.
