Classical conditioning

Cards (6)

  • What is classical conditioning?
    > Learning by association
    > Learning is passive, based on reflex (automatic) behaviours that all humans and animals have
    > When we REPEATEDLY pair a NEW stimulus with an EXISTING STIMULUS RESPONSE link, learn to ASSOCIATE the two stimuli and RESPOND to both in a SIMILAR manner
  • What is the concept of classical conditioning?
    Unconditional stimulus = Unconditioned response

Unconditioned stimulus + Neutral stimulus = Unconditioned response

    Conditioned stimulus = Conditioned response
  • What is stimulus generalisation?
    > Occurs when a stimulus similar to the conditional stimulus produces a conditioned response
    > Common in marketing
  • What is stimulus discrimination?
    > Opposite to stimulus generalisation
    > Only occurs in response to a specific stimulus
    > Common in marketing (colour of packaging)
  • What is extinction?
    > An association using classical conditioning is no longer present
    > Conditional stimulus is continually presented without the unconditioned stimulus
    > Association is lost
  • What is spontaneous recovery?
    > Unconditioned stimulus and the conditioned stimulus are paired again, association reappears
    > Accelerated learning
