Atria
are
thin-walled chambers
that receive
blood
from
veins
The heart is located between the
lungs
, behind the
sternum
(breastbone) and to the
left
side.
The
left atrium
receives
oxygenated
blood from the
pulmonary vein
and pumps it into the
left ventricle.
Blood
flows through the heart in one direction only due to
valves
between the
atria
and
ventricles.
The
right ventricle
pumps blood through the
pulmonary artery
to the
lungs
where
carbon dioxide
is removed and
oxygen
added.
The heart is divided into
four
chambers, two
atria
(upper) and two
ventricles
(lower).
The
right atrium
receives
deoxygenated
blood from the
vena cavae
and pumps it into the
right ventricle.
Ventricles
are
thicker walled chambers
that
pump blood out
to the
rest
of the
body
or
lungs.
