  • Atria are thin-walled chambers that receive blood from veins
  • The heart is located between the lungs, behind the sternum (breastbone) and to the left side.
  • The left atrium receives oxygenated blood from the pulmonary vein and pumps it into the left ventricle.
  • Blood flows through the heart in one direction only due to valves between the atria and ventricles.
  • The right ventricle pumps blood through the pulmonary artery to the lungs where carbon dioxide is removed and oxygen added.
  • The heart is divided into four chambers, two atria (upper) and two ventricles (lower).
  • The right atrium receives deoxygenated blood from the vena cavae and pumps it into the right ventricle.
  • Ventricles are thicker walled chambers that pump blood out to the rest of the body or lungs.
