  • What is the first stage of Duck's phase model?
    Intrapsychic phase:
    • One or both partners are unhappy with an aspect of the relationship
    • This causes them to evaluate the costs and rewards of their relationship, and reconsider the profitability as compared to the investments
    • Most of these processes are private, and are unlikely to be shared
  • What is the second stage of Duck's phase model?
    Dyadic phase:
    • partners discuss their private thoughts about the problem that occurred during the intra-psychic phase
    • the couple can salvage the relationship or trigger the beginning of a public breakdown.

    Social phase:
    • the breakup becomes public
    • friends of the couple may evaluate the relationship to either give support or place blame on one of the partners, which results in the the mutual friends taking sides
    • the last attempt of saving the relationship may be made by these friends by offering their advice or helping resolve issues

    Grave-dressing phase:
    • the end of the relationship is confirmed and both members start ‘moving on’
    • both partners try to maintain a positive social image by trying to make the cause of the end of the relationship look more socially-acceptable
    • both partners make new plans to carry on with their lives, taking with them valuable lessons learnt from the previous relationship

    Resurrection phase:
    • people move beyond the pain and distress associated with ending the relationship, and experience personal growth
