The two types of respiration are aerobic and anaerobic respiration
Aerobic respiration = glucose + oxygen -> carbon dioxide + water + ATP (lots)
Aerobic respiration uses oxygen so breaks down the entire glucose molecule and is more efficient than anaerobic respiration
Anaerobic respiration = glucose -> ATP (little) + lactic acid
anaerobic respiration doesn't use oxygen so doesn't full break down the entire glucose molecule, so is less efficent
Anaerobic respiration produces lactic acid = a poisonous gas that causes cramps
aerobic respiration occurs in mitochondria
anaerobic respiration = less ATP made per glucose molecule
aerobic respiration = more glucose made per glucose molecule
respiration releases energy in the form of ATP
Respiration reactions are controlled by enzymes (starch to glucose for respiration)
Respiration also wastes energy in the form of heat
heavy exercise = oxygen debt (body doesn't have enough oxygen) = lactic acid builds up = heavy breathing to repay debt (needed to break down lactic acid
lactic acid = muscle cramps
more fit = stronger hearts so can breath in more oxygen = pumped around more efficiently = more aerobic respiration = less lactic acid
Less fit = produce less co2 (made in aerobic resp) + more lactic acid ; doing more anaerobic resp as they can't breathe in as much oxygen
